Life can hit us out of nowhere sometimes! When outward circumstances become rocky and unpredictable, it can test even our strongest relationships.
Often, in marriages, we see trials do one of two things: tear a couple apart or draw them closer together. It’s not up to chance which one happens. The latter takes intentionality from both sides.
How can you lean into God together as a couple when you find yourself in difficult circumstances?
Trials have a way of testing our faith. Sometimes, we can be tempted to question why God would allow bad things to happen to us. It can even cause people to resent God and lose their faith altogether. When our world falls apart, the best thing we can do is run to the One who holds it all together.
“Lord, we may not understand what’s going on or why these things are happening, but we know you walk beside us each day. Help us to lean into you and rely on your strength to get us through. Keep our trust in you steady as the ground beneath us shakes.”
One of the scariest things we can experience is uncertainty. It’s in our human nature to want to have control of situations and be given a certain level of predictability to make us feel at ease. When circumstances change out of nowhere, and we’re left with no idea of what the future looks like, it can leave us overwhelmed and afraid.
“Dear God, this situation is scary. We don’t know where you’re leading us or what that future looks like. Please hold us close and fill us with a sense of overwhelming peace that comes only from You. Help us to remember that you have a plan, and one day, all will be made right.”
Marriage is tough sometimes. We’re not always going to be on the same page as our spouses. This can be especially true when we’re in crisis. When we’re both worn out and emotionally exhausted, it can cause us to be short with each other, sometimes without even realizing it. Being united with your spouse is so important, even more so in situations that leave us feeling fragile. We need our spouse to be someone we can rely on.
“Unite us, Lord. Help us to lay aside our differences. Bring us together as we seek shelter in You from this storm. Give us grace and patience with one another, as we are both struggling and dealing with our own emotions. Help us to love and support each other. Grow our bond deeper through this.”
A lot of things can stem from fear. One is the feeling of indecisiveness. When storms in life knock us down, we often don’t know where to go or what to do next. This can leave us feeling stuck and hopeless. As we seek guidance, we need to turn to God.
“Guide us, O God, through these days that seem impossible to navigate. When we feel frozen in fear, and the path ahead is daunting and unclear, please show us the steps you would have us take. Give us the strength to walk in them.”
Most of us have a pretty good idea of what we think our lives “should” look like. We know what we want to happen, what we want to accomplish, etc. However, often, these things are beyond our control. Sometimes, things happen in life that turn our plans upside down, and the only thing we have left to do is trust that God has something else in store.
“Lord, when it feels like everything is going wrong, and things aren’t turning out how we planned, remind us that you are in control. Help us surrender our desires to you and trust that you are working. Remind us of your goodness. Help us to recount all the ways you have provided for us in the past, knowing you will carry us through once more.”
The best thing we can do for our marriages is to center them on Christ, not just by turning to him when things go wrong, but by seeking him on a regular basis. By spending time in the word and prayer in our daily lives, we lay a strong foundation for when the storms of life hit.
When the winds and waves come, we can cling to the Rock, and we will not be moved.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” Isaiah 43:2 (ESV)
