6 Prayers for Your Mental Health

A Prayer for the Bully Who Lives in Your Head

Scripture:

“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” – Romans 12:2 NLT

Prayer:

Father, please transform me one thought at a time. I am really good at focusing on all of the things I am doing wrong and all of the ways I am not good enough. The things I say to myself in my head are words I would never say about anyone else. I bully myself daily with my thoughts. I need You to replace the negative thoughts I have about myself with what You say about me. I am loved. I am called. I am worthy. I am a child of the King. Please show me your patience as You retrain my brain to see about myself through Your eyes. Thank You for your grace that meets me where I am. Amen.

A Mental Health Prayer about Your Anxious Thoughts

Scripture:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6

Prayer:

Father, thank You for bending down to hear my prayers. I admit that I am worried and feel anxious right now. Sometimes when I feel this way, I fall for the lie that it makes me a bad Christian. This leads me to hide my struggles in shame from people closest to me. I know that shame does not come from You. I want to claim the truth found in Philippians 4:6 but I need Your help. That’s why I’m praying to you right now. I am bringing all of these worried thoughts right to your feet. My heart’s desire is to release them to You and leave them with You. I want to exchange my worried and anxious thoughts for Your peace. I might need to repeat this prayer a few thousand times more so thank You for always listening and responding with patience, love, and open arms. Amen.

A Prayer for When You Feel Alone

Scripture:

“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.” – Psalm 9:10 NLT

Prayer:

Father, I trust in You. I believe in Your promises. Scratch that. I am clinging to Your promises like a lifeline right now. I feel alone and lonely. But, I know in my heart that You are with me. When the lies get louder in my head that tell me I am all by myself, please drown them out with Your truth. I know You will not abandon me. Ever. You are faithful. Increase my trust. Amen.

A Prayer for When You Fall for the Comparison Trap

Scripture:

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” – Proverbs 14:30

Prayer:

Ok God. Confession time. I spend too much time on social media wishing my life looked as picture perfect as the influencers and friends I scroll through. I find myself asking why my kids don’t act like that or why my spouse doesn’t do that for me or even why can’t my body or my house look that way? Ugh. I know I am giving envy fertile ground in my mind. Help me kill the weeds of envy that I planted. Help me to resist the temptation to compare my everyday life with the carefully curated ones on social media. I want a heart at peace and I know I desperately need your help in my struggles with envy. Amen.

A Prayer for God’s Guidance When You Feel Lost

Scripture:

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” – Psalm 32:8

Prayer:

Father, I don’t know what to do. I am faced with a decision that feels life-altering. It’s keeping me awake at night and on edge during the day.  I don’t want to make the wrong decision. I want to choose what honors You and aligns with Your plans for my life. But, I don’t have clarity on what that is right now. I need You to show me. While I would love to see the entire path set before me, I know I need to take the next step in obedience without that full plan. Show me that step. Keep Your eye on me and guide me as only Your love can. I trust You. Amen.

A Mental Health Prayer for Peace on the Hard Days

Scripture:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

Prayer:

Today stinks. Yesterday did, too. In fact, the whole week went sideways. Nothing went as planned. It’s like trouble waited for me around every single corner and hid behind the chairs, too. Jesus thank You for knowing that I would have times like this. Thank You for preparing me with the truth found in John 16:33. I receive Your peace with open arms and stand before every obstacle I face and say: Not today! While I know I don’t have control over the challenges that I might face, I do have control over my response. And, I am taking a stand to claim the peace You offer and the truth that You have overcome the world. I love You and am thankful for You. And, please, when I waver in this confidence, hold me steady. Amen.
