You can live without food for 20-60 days. You can only live three days without water. Without water, body systems change. Cells shrink, joints ache, thought processes suffer. Weariness, confusion and headaches are all linked to dehydration. The easy remedy? Drink water.
I fill a carafe with water each morning. It’s my reminder to drink the eight glasses of water that experts recommend to stay hydrated. It’s incredible how a simple glass of water refreshes and re-energizes.
We live in a thirsty land. The breaking news is often a tragic sign of a sun-parched soul, someone whose life is so shriveled and dry they’ve lost their sense of right or wrong. Like a wanderer in a desert, they’ve become crazed by the heat. They’re driven by thirst.
If we don’t recognize the spiritual nature of social problems, their thirst is usually tagged as a thirst for love or money or power. However, if we connect the dots, it’s easy to spot a dehydrated soul. A thirsty spirit that desperately needs the Living Water that Jesus offers to all who ask.
Is your spirit thirsty? Are you showing the early signs of a dehydrated soul? Fatigue, worry, doubt – these can all be linked back to a soul that’s parched. A spirit that needs to be refreshed and uplifted.
Remember the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well? She had come to draw water and He spoke to her thirsty soul.
“Jesus replied ‘Everyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.’” (John 4:13-14 NLT)
The encounter changed her life. It transformed the entire village where she lived. There’s something about God’s living water that turns a parched soul into a life-giving vessel.
Have you been drinking from the well of your salvation? Just as my water carafe is a reminder to drink water throughout the day, you can build reminders into your life that will keep your soul hydrated.
1. Drink daily.
Is your Bible within easy reach? Set it out before you go to bed so when you wake up it’s easy to grab and read before you start your day. (Life hack: Try slipping a Bible under your pillow. It will prompt you to read a verse as you crawl into bed!)
2. Drink often.
What scripture verse is speaking to you right now? Write it on a sticky note and post it in easy sight on your fridge, your bathroom mirror, or even your car’s dashboard.
3. Add flavor.
Some people add flavor packets to their water to make drinking easier. Add flavor to your spiritual water by incorporating Christian music into your day.
4. Set reminders.
Set an alarm mid-day on your phone to remind you to pause and pray throughout the day. Recommit your day to the Lord, read a verse or two in your Bible, or even take a short walk to drink in His presence.
5. Make it easy.
When I fill my carafe with water every day, I’ve made it easy to drink my quota. Bible apps can make it easy to hydrate your spirit. Listen to an audio Bible or devotional as you drive to work or an appointment, or as you clean the house or make supper. (One of my favorite hacks is listening to the Bible or a worship song while I’m in the shower.)
Jesus is the only One who can quench your spiritual thirst. If you’re showing signs of dehydration, seek His presence. Come and drink. Refresh your soul.
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.”
— John 7:37 BSB
