Bible Verses For When You Wonder if God Hears You

Do you ever wonder if God truly hears you? Are your prayers reaching Him, or are they just bouncing off the ceiling into thin air? We might think God has bigger and better things to do than listen to the seemingly insignificant details of our day-to-day lives.

However, the Bible paints a different picture. It tells us that God is close to us, cares for us, and wants us to come to Him with whatever’s on our hearts.

If you’re doubting whether God is truly listening to you today, I’d encourage you to cling to the following verses.

1 Peter 5: 6-7 (ESV)

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”

“All your anxieties”

Some versions say “care” or “worries.” Whatever you’re thinking about, whatever’s weighing heavily on you, God wants you to bring it to Him.

Why?

“Because He cares for you.”

God, the Creator of the Universe, the all-powerful, ever-present, all-knowing One, cares deeply and unconditionally about little ole’ you! He cared enough to give up His Son, suffering a brutal death on the cross, so that you could spend eternity with Him.

Psalm 34:17-18 (KJV)

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

“The Lord hears.”

When you cry out sincerely to the Lord, He hears you! He’s not too distracted, busy, or far away to listen.

“Near to the brokenhearted.”

In our brokenness and difficulties, we may doubt if God even cares. His Word tells us that He is close to the brokenhearted. Whatever you are going through, He’s right there with you, holding onto you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV)

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

“It is the Lord your God who goes with you.”

I need to remember this. I’ll try to go through life on my own and wonder why it’s so hard and feels like I can’t do anything right, forgetting that God is right there with me. He’s not weak or afraid, and neither should I be when I have him by my side.

“He will not leave you or forsake you.”

This specific passage was to encourage the people of Israel that God was not going to abandon them in this season of turmoil. This sentiment is repeated often throughout other Scriptures (Joshua 1:5; 1 Kings 8:57; Hebrews 13:5).

We can take God at His Word. He is not leaving us or giving up on us anytime soon!

Lamentations 3:55-57 (ESV)

“I called on your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit; you heard my plea, ‘Do not close your ear to my cry for help!’ You came near when I called on you; you said, ‘Do not fear!’”

“You heard my plea.”

God hears you, whether you’re on the mountaintop or crying out from the depths of despair. He’s listening and there to comfort you.

“You came near.”

God is faithful in coming to us when we call on His name. He’s there to reassure and encourage us through whatever challenges we’re facing.

Psalm 55:16-17 (ESV)

“But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon, I utter my complaint and moan, and He hears my voice.”

“The Lord will save me.”

The Lord saves us. Whether we see visible relief on this side of Heaven or must wait until we get there, He saves us from our sins and the wrath that would be eternal separation from Him.

“He hears my voice.”

The psalmist is crying out to God all day long. It doesn’t matter the time of day or the situation at hand; God hears his voice.

Isaiah 49:15 (ESV)

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.”

God will not forget His people. He loves you as his precious child, and He will not desert you to face this life on your own.

1 Peter 3:12 (ESV)

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

This verse paints a contrast between how the Lord responds to the hearts of the righteous and the wicked. If you genuinely seek God, He will hear your prayer.

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

” Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

“With confidence”

We can approach God confidently, knowing that He hears and cares for us. Unlike with many other religions, our God is accessible to us. We can communicate with Him directly whenever we need to, from wherever we are.

“Receive mercy and find grace.”

When we approach God with sincere hearts, he meets us with mercy and grace. What a beautiful thing to have someone we can always rely on to be there for us with love and understanding.

Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

God doesn’t listen to us reluctantly. He wants us to talk to Him about anything and everything. He tells us to come to Him and offers us peace and protection.

Psalm 145:18 (ESV)

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.”

In our human limitations, it can be hard for us, at times, to recognize God’s closeness. Since we can’t physically see Him or audibly hear Him, He can feel distant from us. The Bible reassures us that this is not the case. If you call to Him in truth, He is near to you.

A God of His Word

I am so thankful that God gave us His Word. He never changes, and He keeps His promises. So, if He tells us, repeatedly, throughout scripture that He hears us and cares deeply about us, we can rest assured it’s true.

Unlike many of our earthly relationships, God does not tire of hearing our requests. He doesn’t have “selective hearing” or get distracted by other things when we talk to Him.

He listens intently with care. He comforts us and walks alongside us. He responds to our desires from His infinite wisdom for the ultimate best, even if we don’t understand at the time.
